What is an electronic lock or keyless entry?

Electronic locks are actually a little different from a keyless entry, but they both have the same idea: they don’t use traditional keys. Electronic locks could be with tap passes or key cards, but keyless entry usually use codes or push buttons to unlock a door. That being said, code-entry door locks on many front doors are actually electronic because the system is run by a battery. If you’re looking for a keyless entry that doesn’t not require batteries, you can use a push button mechanical system but ask for that specifically.

Types of keyless entry and electronic locks

There are many different types of locks that don’t use keys.'

Mechanical locks

Mechanical locks are door locks that don’t use keys or batteries. They are the push button locks that require a code to unlock and turn the deadbolt. 

The benefit of mechanical locks:

  • you don’t need to change batteries

  • No need to remember keys

  • Access code can be changed when needed

  • More affordable than electric locks

Mechanical locks are typical on:

  • Garage doors

  • Back offices

  • Janitor closets

  • Storage closets

  • Side entryways

Electric Keypad Locks

Keypad locks have become way more popular over the past few years. They’re more common than mechanical locks on front doors and residential buildings because they aren’t as bulky. You do need to change batteries on an electric keypad lock. 

FUN TIP: A-1 recommends you opt for a 9 volt battery instead of 4 AA batteries! The 9 volt lasts longer and wont die on you as quick. That is the one downside of the electric lock; if the battery dies, you need to call a locksmith to open the door for you.  (Luck for you, you can always call A-1! )

Electric keypad locks are great high security front locks because you don’t need a key, and you can’t get in unless you know the code. 

There are a lot of different styles though so look online for visit a hardware store to pick the best one for you.

Electronic Key Pass

Instead of having a lock with a key that can be copied, you can get a lock that has a fob or electronic key pass to open it. These keys need to be coded by the locksmith that installed it and can’t be copied. These types of electronic locks are popular for large buildings like schools, office buildings, back doors and staff doors of hospitals and nursing homes, and other buildings with sensitive areas.

Biometric Door Locks (Fingerprint Locks!)

Lock and unlock your door with a touch of a finger - literally! As technology around fingerprinting has advanced, door locks have too. You can now get door locks that can be unlocked with your fingerprint. These biometric door locks are mainly used for residential buildings and can be more expensive. But they are super cool
