Ordering Locks on Amazon: Should You Do It?

With YouTube providing plenty of DIY tips and tricks and locks available at your local hardware store or even on Amazon, you may be tempted to order your own locks and install them yourself.

We are a local, family run business. We’re all for self-starters and getting things done yourself, but it’s not that simple with locks and keys.

Should you order your own locks online?

There are benefits to ordering your locks yourself.

  • You can get the exact type of lock you want like key pad, electronic or key locks

  • The type of finishing or colouring can be chosen by you and you can get as specific as you want

But, there are some resons that you may not want to order your locks online.

  • Locksmiths and professional lock services can have better prices and deals than in store by ordering from the supplier

  • Locksmiths have more insight into brands and quality that isn’t available in online reviews

Ordering VS Installing Locks Yourself

If you really are specific about what type of lock you want, we get it. But ordering locks online is very different from installing it yourself. If you’re not a professional, you risk installing the lock incorrectly. With your home and personal safety, you don’t want to risk it.

For any external-facing doors or locks on front doors, garage doors window locks, or any other security-type locks, you will want to call a local locksmith to install the lock for you. Interior locks and doors are a much better bet for testing out your skills.

Tips For Ordering Locks on Amazon

If you are going to order door locks on Amazon, these are some tips we reccomend:

  • Check the brand name. Going off-brand isn’t always the best bet with locks. Quality locks have a reputation for a reason.

  • Get them installed by a professional locksmith.

  • Make sure you’re getting what you need. Not all locks come with deadbolts or the number of keys you need.

  • The direction of the lock. Not all locks are bidirectional and may not work for your door, depending on what side the lock is on.
